Planai-Hochwurzen Cable Cars

In harmony with the landscape, the Planai-Hochwurzen cable cars stand in Schladming. For the new cable car station, thermally treated spruce from Mareiner was used for cladding the middle and mountain stations, while Mareiner's Piz Nair with a smooth band-saw cut was chosen for the interior design of the bar in the valley. This ensures that guests not only feel comfortable while skiing, but also enjoy a sense of well-being from the views and surroundings.

Building on the mountain is always an adventure: Bringing in materials and machinery is exponentially more challenging compared to the valley, much like the weather conditions at higher altitudes. Additionally, designing the structures so they blend harmoniously into the alpine landscape while remaining functionally clear is a task that architect Gerhard Kreiner faces with the construction of the mid- and mountain stations, as well as the ‘Finale’ ski lounge for the Planai cable cars. This is achieved through the maximum streamlining of the building forms, with Mareiner wood facades combined with large glass fronts, visually lightening the structures even further.

What was most important to me was the perspective of the guests. The guest doesn’t want to see technical buildings; they want to enjoy their vacation. The technology and its housing must blend into the landscape as seamlessly as possible.
